Thuyamalli Rice is a traditional rice variety from Tamil Nadu, known for its distinctive grain, natural aroma and wholesome taste. It is one of the traditional rice varieties that has been valued in Tamil households for generations. Thuyamalli, also known as Thuyamalli Arisi, is a great choice for people who want to include traditional rice varieties in their everyday meals.
Unlike highly polished modern rice varieties, traditional rice such as Thuyamalli can retain more of the natural components of the grain when processed with minimal polishing. It provides carbohydrates for energy along with naturally occurring dietary fibre, protein and essential minerals. Its pleasant texture and mild traditional flavour make it suitable for a wide range of South Indian dishes.
Thuyamalli Rice can be used to prepare everyday cooked rice, steamed rice dishes, kanji, pongal and other traditional recipes. It pairs well with sambar, rasam, dal, vegetable curries, greens and other wholesome side dishes. The rice can also be soaked before cooking to help achieve a softer texture and more even cooking.
For families looking to move beyond commonly consumed polished white rice, Thuyamalli offers an opportunity to enjoy a traditional Tamil rice variety as part of a balanced diet. Combining it with vegetables, pulses, legumes and other nutritious foods can make it part of a wholesome everyday meal.
