Description
Thanga Samba Rice, historically celebrated as the "Golden Rice" of Tamil Nadu, is a highly prized traditional heirloom grain named after its natural golden hue (Thangam meaning gold). Cultivated through chemical-free, sustainable agricultural methods, this unpolished rice variety retains its nutrient-dense outer bran layer. It delivers a pleasant aroma, a distinct fine grain texture, and an appealing subtle nutty taste that enhances any traditional South Indian meal.
In heritage culinary practices, Thanga Samba Rice is valued for its outstanding cooking quality and rich nutritional profile. When steamed, it yields light, non-sticky, fluffy grains that make an excellent daily alternative to white rice, pairing seamlessly with traditional sambar, rasam, spiced lentil curries, and vegetable stir-fries. It is also a preferred choice for preparing aromatic ghee rice, mild pulaos, lemon rice, and sweet festive preparations like traditional pongal.
How to
Use
1. Rinse the rice gently 2 to 3 times in clean water.
2. Soak in fresh water for 30 to 45 minutes before cooking to soften the unpolished grain.
3. Add 1 cup of soaked rice to 2.5 to 3 cups of water in a pot or pressure cooker.
4. Pressure cook for 3 to 4 whistles on medium flame, then allow the steam to release naturally.
5. Serve hot alongside curries, dals, rasam, or stir-fried vegetables.
6. Great for preparing aromatic variety rice dishes like lemon rice, coconut rice, or ghee rice.
Storage
Instruction
Store in a clean, airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture, adding a few dry bay leaves to naturally protect the unpolished grains.
