Description
Raw Red Rice is a wholesome, traditional whole-grain staple celebrated for its high nutritional value, deep earthy flavor, and rich crimson appearance. Unlike parboiled varieties, raw red rice undergoes minimal processing, preserving its natural bran layer in its purest form. Cultivated through chemical-free, sustainable farming practices, this unpolished grain is packed with essential dietary fiber, natural antioxidants, and vital minerals, making it a superior, health-focused alternative to polished white rice for conscious daily eating.
In traditional and modern kitchens alike, Raw Red Rice is appreciated for its exceptional versatility and hearty texture. When soaked and steamed, it serves as a robust, nutrient-dense base alongside traditional sambar, rasam, spiced lentil curries, and vegetable stir-fries. Because it is raw, it is especially famous for making superior-quality batter for crisp dosas, fluffy idlis, and traditional appams with an authentic, rustic taste. It can also be slow-cooked into a light, nourishing porridge (kanji) or tossed into vibrant, healthy grain bowls for a sustained release of natural energy throughout the day.
How to
Use
1. Rinse the rice thoroughly 2 to 3 times in clean water.
2. Soak in fresh water for at least 1 to 2 hours before cooking to soften the unpolished raw grain.
3. Add 1 cup of soaked rice to 3 to 3.5 cups of water in a pot or pressure cooker.
4. Pressure cook for 4 to 5 whistles on medium flame, then allow the steam to release naturally.
5. For batter, soak along with urad dal for 4 to 6 hours, grind finely, ferment overnight, and make crispy dosas or soft idlis.
6. Serve cooked grains hot alongside traditional curries, stews, rasam, or cooked vegetables.
Storage
Instruction
Store in a clean, airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture, adding a few dry bay leaves to naturally protect the unpolished grains.
