Description
Rakthashali Rice, historically celebrated as "Blood Red Rice," is a rare, cherished heirloom grain deeply rooted in ancient Indian agricultural tradition. Mentioned in classical Ayurvedic literature for its remarkable restorative qualities, this traditional variety is cultivated using time-honored natural farming practices to preserve its purity, rich aroma, and distinctive crimson bran layer. Unlike mass-produced white varieties, this unpolished grain retains its outer husk intact, delivering a delightfully earthy, nutty flavor profile accompanied by a firm, satisfying chew. Its natural deep red hue adds a striking visual element to any meal while reflecting a rich heritage of sustainable, chemical-free cultivation that honors soil vitality and biodiversity.
Beyond its rich cultural history, Rakthashali Rice serves as an exceptionally versatile staple in the modern kitchen, seamlessly adapting to both traditional recipes and healthy contemporary dishes. When prepared as a simple daily steamed grain, it provides a hearty, wholesome base that pairs seamlessly alongside rich vegetable curries, traditional dals, rasam, or spiced lentil stews.
For a soothing and gentle option, it can be slow-simmered with extra water, crushed ginger, and a pinch of rock salt to create a comforting, easily digestible porridge or kanji that is perfect for light suppers or body recovery. The firm structure of the grain also holds up exceptionally well when used as a colorful foundation for tossed salads, Mediterranean grain bowls, or aromatic spice-infused pilafs.
Additionally, soaking and grinding this traditional red rice along with lentils allows you to make distinctively earthy batter for crisp dosas, soft steamed idlis, or savory breakfast crepes that bring an authentic taste of traditional heritage straight to the table.
How to
Use
1. Rinse the rice thoroughly 2 to 3 times in fresh water until the water runs clear.
2. Soak in clean water for at least 30 to 45 minutes to soften the unpolished grain and reduce cooking time.
3. Add 1 cup of soaked rice to 3 to 3.5 cups of water in a heavy-bottomed pot or pressure cooker.
4. Pressure cook for 4 to 5 whistles on medium flame, then allow the steam to release naturally.
5. If cooking in an open pot, simmer covered for 30 to 40 minutes until the grains are tender and fully expanded.
6. Fluff gently with a fork and serve hot alongside curries, dals, rasam, or stir-fried vegetables.
Storage
Instruction
Store in a clean, airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture, adding a few dry bay leaves to naturally protect the unpolished grains.
